Bangladesh Quake Kills 3 as Dhaka Residents Flee Buildings in Panic

A magnitude-5.7 earthquake jolted Bangladesh on Friday, killing at least three people in Dhaka and sending thousands rushing into the streets.

Police said the victims died when the railing of a five-story building collapsed in the capital’s Bangshal neighborhood. “Three people were killed in the incident,” police officer Ashish Bose told Anadolu.

The quake, which struck at 10:38 a.m. local time (0438GMT), had its epicenter in Narsingdi district, roughly 50 kilometers (31 miles) northeast of Dhaka, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department.

Though the tremor lasted only a few seconds, its impact rattled the capital. Residents abandoned homes and office buildings in panic as the ground shook.

The fire department reported seven cases of structural damage in and around Dhaka, while at least one person was injured.
