Bollywood action superstar Dharmendra Deol, celebrated as the industry’s original “He-Man,” has died at the age of 89. Over a career spanning more than six decades, he appeared in more than 300 films and became one of Indian cinema’s most beloved actors.
There was no official statement from his family, but several contemporaries—including veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan—were seen at a crematorium in Juhu, Mumbai, where the funeral took place.
Producer and director Karan Johar, who cast Dharmendra in his 2023 film Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani (Rocky and Rani’s Love Story), paid tribute on Instagram, calling him “a massive mega star, the embodiment of a hero in mainstream cinema.”
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also extended condolences, saying the actor’s passing marks the end of an era. “He was an iconic film personality, a phenomenal actor who brought charm and depth to every role he played. The manner in which he played diverse roles struck a chord with countless people,” Modi wrote on social media.

Known simply as Dharmendra to millions of admirers, he rose to become one of the biggest stars of his time, leaving an enduring legacy across genres—from romance and drama to some of Bollywood’s most acclaimed action films.
