Lucknow: In the presence of a massive police force, bulldozers demolished a madrasa, several shops and huts near the shrine of Shmina Shah Baba in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.
According to Kashmir Media Service, these demolitions have stirred controversy with locals and madrasa authorities accusing the government of discrimination and continuous targeted attacks on Muslims and their institutions.
A day earlier, demolitions were also carried out. Bulldozers resumed for the second day in a row for nine hours. The university in the area, King George Medical University had accused that the madrasa was built on illegal land. Along with the madrasa, 10 shops and 36 huts were demolished which are in close proximity to the University.
Teachers at the madrasa expressed their shock and grief as they witnessed the institution being levelled to the ground.
The madrasa managements maintain that this is discrimination based on religion and demand justice expressing that madrasas are education institutions and serve many students and provide employment to many teachers.
The tensions continue in the area as the residents, shop owners and madrasa authorities demand the authorities to stop the bulldozers while activists raised several objections and criticised the government by calling it ‘misuse of power.’
