After Islamabad Blast, PCB Moves Pakistan–Sri Lanka–Zimbabwe Tri-Series to Rawalpindi for Security Reasons

Rawalpindi: In the wake of a recent suicide car blast in Islamabad, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided to shift the entire Pakistan–Sri Lanka–Zimbabwe T20 Tri-Series to Rawalpindi, citing heightened security concerns and the need to ensure maximum safety for all players and officials.

The tri-series, initially scheduled across Rawalpindi and Lahore, will now be held exclusively at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium under a single-venue security plan. The PCB said the decision was made after consultations with the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) and the Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) boards and in coordination with law enforcement agencies.

Security-First Approach

The relocation follows an explosion near Islamabad that prompted an immediate review of security arrangements. The PCB stated that moving all matches to one venue would eliminate inter-city travel, streamline logistics, and allow security agencies to focus resources more effectively.

Under the revised schedule, the tri-series will begin on November 18, with all league matches and the final on November 29 to start at 6:00 p.m. local time. Each team will play four matches in the league stage, with the top two sides advancing to the final.

Authorities have imposed strict security protocols around the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, with Pakistan Army and paramilitary Rangers reinforcing their presence. The venue is already hosting the remainder of the ongoing Pakistan–Sri Lanka ODI series, ensuring continuity of arrangements.

Unity and Confidence from Visiting Teams

Despite initial apprehensions following the Islamabad blast, both Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe confirmed their participation after receiving strong security assurances from PCB Chairman and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi.

Naqvi personally reviewed the security setup in Rawalpindi and met with officials from both visiting teams, assuring them of “fool-proof” measures in place. His intervention helped avert any withdrawals after some Sri Lankan players had reportedly expressed concerns about returning home early.

Symbol of Trust in Pakistan Cricket

The continuation of the tri-series is seen as a sign of solidarity among the participating nations and a vote of confidence in Pakistan’s ability to safely host international cricket despite security challenges.

The PCB said the decision underscores its ongoing commitment to “protecting players while sustaining Pakistan’s return as a trusted international cricket venue.”

The tri-series, serving as part of preparations for the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup, will now proceed entirely in Rawalpindi under enhanced, centralized security arrangements.

The PCB reaffirmed that comprehensive security coordination will continue throughout the event to ensure the smooth and safe conduct of all matches.
