CA Yunus Mourns Casualties of Bangladeshi Peacekeepers in Sudan Drone Attack
Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has expressed deep shock and sorrow over the casualties suffered by Bangladeshi peacekeepers following a surprise drone attack by terrorists on a United Nations peacekeeping base in Sudan’s Abyei area.
“I am deeply saddened by the news that six of our brave peacekeepers embraced martyrdom and eight others were injured while carrying out the noble duty of establishing peace and stability,” Prof Yunus said in a statement issued Saturday night.
He noted that Bangladesh’s contributions to UN peacekeeping missions are internationally recognized, describing the fallen soldiers’ sacrifice as both a source of national pride and profound grief.
Prof Yunus offered prayers for the eternal peace of the deceased and extended his heartfelt condolences to their families. He also wished the injured peacekeepers a swift and full recovery.
The Chief Adviser said the United Nations has already been urged to take urgent steps to ensure the highest level of medical care and all necessary support for the injured. He added that, during this difficult time, the Bangladesh government will stand firmly by the families of the peacekeepers.
Strongly condemning the attack, Prof Yunus said assaults on peacekeepers constitute a serious crime against international peace and humanity. He called on the UN and the international community to take effective measures to further strengthen the security of peacekeeping personnel.
The statement added that the Bangladesh government will continue close coordination with the UN to ensure the prompt repatriation of the bodies of the slain peacekeepers and proper medical treatment for those wounded.
