Amman — Jordan said on Sunday it had partially reopened its border crossing with the Israeli-occupied West Bank, three days after closing it following a shooting that killed two Israeli soldiers.
“The crossing reopened Sunday for travelers only, while the movement of cargo trucks remains suspended until further notice,” the Jordanian government said in a statement.
Heavy traffic was reported in both directions at the Allenby crossing — the only exit point Palestinians in the West Bank can use to travel abroad without passing through Israel, which has occupied the territory since 1967.
The crossing was shut down on Thursday after a Jordanian truck driver delivering aid to Gaza opened fire, killing an Israeli soldier and a reserve officer with the civil administration before being “neutralized” by Israeli forces.
Jordan identified the assailant as Abdel Mutaleb Al-Qaissi, 57, describing him as “a civilian who had been working for three months as a driver delivering aid to Gaza.” Amman launched an investigation into the attack and condemned the shooting as a “threat to the kingdom’s interests and to its ability to deliver humanitarian assistance to the Gaza Strip.”
The Israeli military had requested Jordan suspend aid transfers through the terminal following the attack.
The reopening comes as Gaza remains gripped by a humanitarian crisis after nearly two years of war, with international agencies warning of famine and mass displacement.
