Supreme Court Grants Bail to PTI Leader Imran Khan in Key Case

Islamabad: The Supreme Court of Pakistan has granted bail to former Prime Minister Imran Khan in eight cases related to the May 9, 2023, riots, which include the attack on the residence of the Lahore corps commander.

This decision came after a three-member bench, led by Chief Justice Yahya Afridi and comprising Justices Muhammad Shafi Siddiqui and Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb, resumed hearings on Khan’s petitions.

Earlier, in November 2024, an anti-terrorism court in Lahore had rejected Khan’s bail requests in these cases. That ruling was upheld by the Lahore High Court on June 24, 2025, prompting Khan to take his appeal to the apex court.

During the hearing, Chief Justice Afridi questioned the legal grounds on which the Lahore High Court had issued its ruling, particularly asking whether a final observation could be made in a bail matter.

He also pointed out that the same high court had granted bail to another suspect in a similar conspiracy charge, raising the issue of judicial consistency.

In response, Punjab’s Special Prosecutor Zulfiqar Naqvi argued that judicial comments during bail proceedings are always considered interim and do not affect the eventual outcome of the trial.

When the hearing resumed after a brief adjournment, Naqvi requested to argue the merits of the case, but the bench firmly restricted the discussion to legal points only.

Imran Khan Still in Jail

Despite receiving bail in these eight cases, Imran Khan remains in custody at Adiala Jail.

He is currently serving a sentence in the £190 million corruption case involving state gifts and still faces other unresolved cases linked to the May 9 events.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), the party Khan founded, welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision and labeled it a triumph by posting on social media with the hashtag “Victory For Imran Khan.
