NAYPYIDAW: An earthquake measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale struck Myanmar on Thursday, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS).
The tremor occurred at a depth of 100 kilometres. In a post on X, the NCS said: “EQ of M: 4.4, on: 18/12/2025 06:04:36 IST, Lat: 26.07 N, Long: 97.00 E, Depth: 100 Km, Location: Myanmar.”
The latest quake follows a series of recent seismic events in the country. On December 13, an earthquake of magnitude 3.9 was recorded at a depth of 115 kilometres. The NCS said: “EQ of M: 3.9, on: 13/12/2025 07:14:00 IST, Lat: 24.79 N, Long: 94.99 E, Depth: 115 Km, Location: Myanmar.”
Earlier, on December 11, Myanmar experienced another earthquake of magnitude 3.8. A day before that, on December 10, a stronger tremor measuring 4.6 struck the region at a depth of 138 kilometres.
Myanmar is highly vulnerable to moderate and strong earthquakes, as well as tsunamis along its long coastline. The country lies at the intersection of four tectonic plates — the Indian, Eurasian, Sunda and Burma plates — which are involved in active geological processes.
Following the devastating magnitude 7.7 and 6.4 earthquakes that hit central Myanmar on March 28, the World Health Organisation (WHO) warned of rapidly escalating health risks for tens of thousands of displaced people in the quake-affected areas.
