The entire executive committee of the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) has resigned as a scandal over the eligibility of foreign-born players continues to shake the country\u2019s football establishment.<\/p>\n
FIFA has accused FAM of falsifying citizenship documents to allow seven foreign-born players to represent Malaysia, launching a formal investigation after the team\u2019s 4\u20130 win over Vietnam in an Asian Cup qualifier last June.<\/p>\n
In a statement, FAM said the mass resignations were intended to allow reforms to proceed \u201cwithout distraction\u201d and to protect the association\u2019s reputation. Until a new leadership is appointed, operations will be overseen by a small team led by the secretary-general, with support from the Asian Football Confederation.<\/p>\n
FIFA claims forged birth certificates were used to make it appear that the players\u2019 grandparents were born in Malaysia, enabling them to qualify under FIFA\u2019s ancestry rules. Investigators said original records showed the grandparents were born in countries such as Argentina and Spain.<\/p>\n
The seven players were fined and handed 12-month suspensions, while FAM was ordered to pay 350,000 Swiss francs. FIFA also overturned three of Malaysia\u2019s match results into 3\u20130 defeats and said it would alert authorities in several countries over alleged forgery.<\/p>\n
FAM has denied wrongdoing, blaming the discrepancies on administrative errors and insisting the players are legitimate Malaysian citizens.<\/p>\n
The case is now before the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which this week lifted the players\u2019 suspensions pending a final ruling expected in late February, allowing them to return to club football in the meantime.<\/p>\n
