\nIn February, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini returned to Iran after 14 years in exile in Iraq and France. By April, a referendum declared Iran an Islamic republic. In November, the United States imposed its first sanctions following the seizure of American hostages at the US Embassy in Tehran, a crisis rooted in Washington\u2019s earlier support for the deposed shah and its role in the 1953 coup against Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh.<\/p>\n
\nIn September, Iraq invaded Iran, triggering an eight-year war that claimed an estimated 500,000 lives, with Iran suffering heavier losses. The conflict was marked by trench warfare and Iraq\u2019s use of chemical weapons against Iranians and Iraqi Kurds.<\/p>\n
\nIn January, the remaining US hostages were released, ending the hostage crisis. In June, a bombing at the Islamic Republican Party headquarters killed dozens of senior officials, including judiciary chief Mohammad Beheshti. Two months later, President Mohammad-Ali Rajai and Prime Minister Mohammad Javad Bahonar were assassinated in another bombing, blamed on the Mojahedin-e Khalq (MEK).<\/p>\n
\nFollowing Israel\u2019s invasion of Lebanon in June, Iran began funding what would become Hezbollah.<\/p>\n
\nIn July, the US Navy cruiser USS Vincennes<\/em> shot down an Iran Air passenger plane over the Gulf, killing all 290 people on board. A UN-brokered ceasefire between Iran and Iraq took effect in August.<\/p>\n
\nAyatollah Khomeini died on June 3, and Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was named supreme leader the following day.<\/p>\n
\nA powerful earthquake struck Iran in June, killing around 40,000 people.<\/p>\n
