When the Nobel Prize was established in 1901, German universities dominated the awards, with Oxford and Cambridge claiming only a modest share. In those days, America was better known for ice cream, football players, and its so-called “cow colleges” than for intellectual pursuits. Books and learning held little allure. Yet, after 1939, as European academics fled Hitler’s tyranny to the cowboy culture of America, the university landscape transformed dramatically.

Within a decade, Nobel Prizes, Turing Awards, Pulitzer Prizes, and other prestigious honors began flowing to institutions like MIT, Harvard, Columbia, and Stanford. From the crucible of American academia emerged transformative enterprises like Google, Intel, Koch, and Dell, propelling the U.S. economy to stratospheric heights.

Then came a convicted felon, now the President of the United States, who resolved to wield the “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) axe against the nation’s own foundations. Supported by millions from the Bible Belt, Budweiser-drinking football enthusiasts with ample waistlines, and those who attribute their failures to Mexicans, Muslims, and Black mothers allegedly living off welfare, this figure has targeted the very institutions that made America exceptional. J.D. Vance, now Vice President, declared in July 2024 that “professors are the true enemy” and urged a full-throated assault on universities.

Under MAGA’s aegis, the White House has imposed bans on discussions of equity, diversity, race, support for marginalized groups, climate change, vaccine efficacy, wildlife conservation, or any topic deemed “woke.” Criticism of Israel has been branded as anti-Semitism and criminalized. If you witness Israeli soldiers firing on children in Gaza, you dare not call it genocide. A deranged faction is ruthlessly dismantling the “liberal establishment.” According to a March 2025 survey conducted under the auspices of the esteemed journal Nature, 75 percent of American scientists are contemplating leaving the country.

Columbia University, once unyielding in its stature, has capitulated. It has paid the government $220 million and an additional $21 million to its Jewish employees for “unlawful targeting and harassment.” Protests in support of Palestine are now banned, curricula are being rewritten, and new faculty in Middle Eastern Studies are being tethered to Israel and Jewish Studies programs. In exchange, the federal government will release $400 million in research funding to Columbia.

Having brought Columbia to its knees, the next target is Harvard. The President has threatened to withhold Harvard’s $9 billion endowment and barred the university from hosting foreign students. Anxiety ripples through the student body. Harvard has turned to the courts, filing multiple lawsuits. Other universities, lacking vast endowment funds, await the outcomes with trepidation, fearing they too may face the President’s wrath.

Harvard is no paragon of moral virtue; its past is not without blemish. In the 1970s, as MIT students, we marched alongside Harvard students—our campus a mere fifteen-minute walk away—protesting Harvard’s complicity in supporting the U.S. government during the Vietnam War. The university has also been known to admit the children of the wealthy and powerful without regard for merit, as seen with figures like General Ayub and the Bhutto dynasty.

Yet, despite these imperfections, Harvard has remained true to its motto, Veritas—Latin for “truth.” Long before the United States came into being, Harvard, with few exceptions, began its pursuit of Veritas. Its spirit is steeped in enlightened inquiry, yielding groundbreaking research in fields from cosmology to biology, psychology to social sciences.

What makes Harvard exceptional? The answer lies in academic freedom—the cornerstone of the quest for fundamental truths about nature and society. Professors are granted resources to pursue their research, while students are encouraged to engage with peers from diverse disciplines, religions, ideologies, nationalities, classes, and genders. Such an environment may unearth uncomfortable truths, but it elevates human intellect to new heights.

To authoritarian leaders like Trump, Putin, Modi, or Xi Jinping, academic freedom is anathema. They seek its annihilation. In South Asia, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) once showed promise of becoming a Harvard-like institution. In 2005, as a Pakistani guest lecturer at JNU, I was struck by the freedom with which I could speak and be heard. Today, JNU’s spirit has been throttled, and Harvard may soon face a similar fate.

In Pakistan, academic freedom is in an even more precarious state. Under British colonial rule, universities were not designed to pursue Veritas. Modeled on Oxford and Cambridge, their purpose was to produce an English-speaking, loyal class to serve the colonial administration, targeting India’s middle class. After independence, India inherited 16 or 17 universities, while Pakistan received only Punjab University in Lahore.

Punjab University, though respectable for its time, suffered greatly when Hindu professors migrated to India and British academics returned to the UK. Within a few years, religious extremists gained dominance over Pakistani universities—a grip that persists today. These zealots tolerate no dissent, silencing even the faintest whisper of opposition.

Pakistan now boasts hundreds of so-called universities, but in truth, they are dark caverns where the light of critical thought is stifled. Having taught at Quaid-i-Azam University for 47 years, I never heard colleagues demand academic freedom or higher educational standards. Their concerns, then and now, revolve solely around securing salary increases and promotions.

Veritas! In this single word lies the secret that, under present or near-future conditions, Pakistan cannot dream of fostering a university like Harvard. A militarized state, intent on controlling its citizens, requires only propaganda machines or technical colleges, not institutions like Harvard. Most Pakistani professors are content with this reality, viewing Veritas not as a virtue but as an obstacle.

As for the true Harvard University, the question remains: how much of its values can it preserve by the end of the current presidency?

This article was firstly published on JedoJehad

By Pervez Hoodbhoy The world envies American universities.
