Union Health Ministry seeks report on Sidhu Moosewala’s mother’s IVF baby
Days after the birth of a baby to the late Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala’s 58-year-old mother through in vitro fertilization (IVF), the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has requested a detailed report from the Punjab government. The Ministry raised concerns over the age limit for ART services under the Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) (Regulation) Act, 2021, which specifies the age range as 21-50 years.
Background and Ministry’s Action
Following reports of Moosewala’s mother conceiving at 58, the Union Health Ministry directed the Punjab government to investigate and report on actions taken in accordance with the ART regulations. The birth of Moosewala’s younger brother was announced by his father, Balkaur Singh, on social media.
Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) Act
The ART (Regulation) Act, 2021, enacted to regulate ART practices in India, sets guidelines for clinics and banks involved in assisted reproduction. The Act aims to ensure safe and ethical practices within the industry.
In-vitro Fertilization (IVF) Process
IVF is a complex fertility treatment involving ovarian stimulation, egg retrieval, fertilization in a lab dish, embryo culture, selection, and transfer to the uterus. Success rates in India range from 30-35%, with private clinics claiming higher success rates.
IVF Necessity, Costs, and Expert Opinion
IVF is sought when natural conception is challenging due to various reasons. Costs vary based on factors like location and clinic reputation. Dr. Suneela Garg emphasizes the increasing popularity of IVF due to modern stressors and couples’ choices in family planning.
