ISLAMABAD (SOUTH ASIAN WIRE) — September 2024 was marked by significant violence in Occupied Kashmir, resulting in the deaths of ten civilians and two Indian soldiers. Reports indicate a rise in civil unrest, human rights violations, and armed clashes between security forces and militants.

The month saw widespread protests organized by local political parties, including the National Conference and the People’s Democratic Party, addressing pressing issues such as land rights and governance reforms. In the judicial sphere, courts processed numerous petitions concerning the unlawful detention of protesters and the misuse of anti-terrorism legislation.

Casualties were reported across various incidents, with two persons killed in Rajouri District on September 9, two in an encounter in Udhampur on September 11, and three in Patan Bara Molla on September 14. On September 28, two militants were killed in Kulgam, while a senior police officer and four soldiers sustained injuries during clashes.

In total, ten militants were reported killed throughout the month, alongside the two soldiers. Authorities conducted over ten significant arrests related to alleged drug and terrorism offenses, including six individuals associated with Jaish-e-Mohammed in Kulgam on September 28.

Human rights advocates have raised concerns over more than 200 civilians detained without trial under the Public Safety Act since the start of the year, contributing to increasing distrust between the local population and the government.
