District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) of Kupwara, under the directives of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) and Jammu and Kashmir Legal Services Authority, conducted its first-ever awareness and training program on LGBTQ++ rights.
The event, held at the ADR Centre within the Court Complex Kupwara, brought together panel lawyers, legal aid defense counsels (LADCs), paralegal volunteers (PLVs), government officials, and members of the public.
Presided over by Shazia Tabasum, Chairperson of the DLSA and Principal District and Sessions Judge Kupwara, the program aimed to illuminate the rights, entitlements, and challenges faced by the LGBTQ++ community, while promoting a more equitable and inclusive society.
Moneer Ahmad, Secretary of DLSA Kupwara, highlighted the pressing need to foster an environment of equality, emphasizing the availability of free legal aid to marginalized groups and celebrating the diversity they bring to society.
Deputy Chief LADC Mozamil Yousuf Bhat delivered the inaugural address, focusing on key terminologies and the social and legal obstacles the LGBTQ++ community confronts daily.
Further insights were provided by resource person Tawseef Raja, who discussed constitutional provisions, political rights, and educational opportunities for the LGBTQ++ community. Raja underscored the significance of anti-discrimination measures and the legal protections enshrined in the Indian Constitution.
The initiative aligns with broader efforts across Jammu and Kashmir to promote awareness and inclusivity. Complementary programs were also held by the Tehsil Legal Services Committee in Sogam, signaling a concerted effort to address these issues at the grassroots level.
