No major snowfall expected till Jan ending: MeT

Srinagar: The weatherman on Saturday said that there was no forecast of any major rain or snow till the end of January in Jammu and Kashmir.
“Under the influence of feeble Western Disturbance, weather most likely to remain generally cloudy with possibility of very light to light rain/snow in plains of J&K during 16-19th and light to moderate snowfall over higher reaches,” an official of the MeT department said in a statement here.
“As of today, there’s no forecast of any major rain/snow till ending Jan. (accuracy 60-70%),” he added.
Meanwhile, Jammu-Srinagar highway, the only surface link connecting Kashmir Valley with the outside world, shall remain open for only one-way traffic on Sunday, officials said here.
“(On Sunday), subject to fair weather and better road condition LMVs Passengers/private Cars shall be allowed from Srinagar towards Jammu (strictly one way) on Jammu-Srinagar highway and shall be allowed from Navyug Tunnel (Qazigund side) at 1100 hrs to 1500 hrs,” a traffic department official here said.
“(Subject to change depending on the road position then) TCU Srinagar liaise with TCU Ramban before releasing the traffic. No Vehicle shall be allowed before and after the cut off timings,” the official said.
The thoroughfare remained shut on Thursday and on Wednesday it was closed shortly after traffic was restored for movement of stranded passenger light-medium vehicles (LMVs) this afternoon.
Meanwhile, Mughal Road, connecting Shopian with Poonch and Rajouri districts, remained closed for vehicular movement in view of snow accumulation at Peer Ki Gali.
Also, Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumri road remained shut for vehicular movement in view of snow accumulation on Zoji la axis and has been closed till further orders. Kishtwar-Sinthan road also remained closed in view of snow accumulation, the traffic department official said. (with GNS inputs)
