Top LeT Commander among two militants killed in Pampore gunfight: Police

Srinagar, Oct 16: Top LeT Commander was among the two militants killed in an encounter at Drangal Pampore area of Awantipora in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Saturday, police said.

Inspector General of Police Kashmir Vijay Kumar said that the top LeT Commander Umer Mushtaq Khanday was killed along with his associate in the gunfight. However, the identity of the other slain militant was yet to be ascertained.

Both the bodies were retrieved from debris after 8 hours of searches, he added.

IGP further said that Umar was involved in killing of two police personnel at Baghat Srinagar on 19th February of this year and was involved in other militancy related crimes.

Umer Mushtaq Khanday a resident of Tulbagh Pampore had gone missing last year in October from his home.

Pertinently, two militants were killed one each in Pulwama and Srinagar encounter on Friday.

Shahid Bashir of Karfali Mohalla Srinagar was killed in Pulwama who as per police was responsible for killing PDD employee at Batamaloo.

Where as Tanzeel Ahmad was killed in Bemina resident of HabbaKadal was involved in killing of probationary Sub Inspector Arshid in Khanyar.

Earlier Reports said that a joint team of Police and army launched a cordon and search operation in Pampore during the wee hours.

As the joint team of forces approached towards the suspected spot, the hiding militants fired upon the forces, triggering off a gunfight.(GNS)
