Al-Badr Chief Gani Khwaja killed in Sopore gunfight

A top militant commander of Al-Badr militant outfit, Abdul Gani Khawaja was killed in a gunfight in Tujjar village of north Kashmir’s Sopore area on Tuesday evening, police said.Senior Superintendent (SSP) of Police Sopore, Javid Iqbal told Rising Kashmir that a joint party of forces killed the top militant commander in a gunfight in Tujjar area while the search was going when this report was filed.Another police officer confirmed that the deceased militant was identified as Al-Badre chief Abdul Gani Khawaja, son of Mukhtar Ahmad Khwaja, a resident of Kralgund Kupwara. The slain militant was active from June 2018 in the area.The officer said the anti-militancy operation was launched by the Special Operations Group (SOG) of Police, paramilitary CRPF, and Army following intelligence inputs.He said as the search parties were zeroing in near the suspected location, the hiding militants opened fire at them who retaliated, triggering a gunfight.Police said the militant was asked to surrender but he didn’t give up arms and was killed in the operation.The officer said adding that it was a major success for the forces stating that the slain was involved in multiple militant-related incidents.“Incriminating materials including arms and ammunition were recovered from the encounter site. All the recovered materials have been taken into case records for further investigation and to probe his complicity in militant crimes,” the police officer said.The officer said the dead body of the slain militant will be sent to Baramulla graveyard for burial after completion of all medico-legal formalities.“People are requested to cooperate with police till the area is completely sanitized and cleared of all the explosive materials,” he said.“The nearest family members of the killed militant would be allowed to participate in last rites. In this connection, a case under relevant sections of law has been registered and investigation has been initiated,” he said.
